Hawaiian Shirt Day!

(ALERT: Tomorrow (Saturday) Start Times Are Different: 10am and 3pm)

Alert: your browser may be showing you an old version of a page which is updated often. F5 (computer) or the ↻ button (phone or tablet) will get you the most recent version.

Today is Hawaiian Shirt Day in memory of Peter Herold. The day is sponsored by Peter's friends and will feature Hawaiian-themed decorations and music (during the breaks) as well as a late-night special event. Players are encouraged to wear Hawaiian or at least brightly-coloured shirts like those above. Prizes will be awarded.

April 21 Historical Headlines (from Wikipedia)

Can you fill in the blanks and then put them into the correct chronological order? (Answers at the bottom of the page...)

Attendance So Far

931 tables at the end of Day Five (Friday), 62.4% of the 2019 total. For full details, check out the new Table Counts page!

Bridge clubs and tournaments throughout the ACBL are struggling with returning to live play, so comparing this tournament's attendance to one before the pandemic is not really fair. We'll be very happy if the tournament hits 60% of the 2019 table count of 1932 tables, so 1159 is the target number, but it is starting to look like we'll do even better!

Brain Warmup Department: Galaxies

For those of you who used to like the puzzles I printed in the old bulletins, here is a link to an online version: one of the puzzles that I used to feature in the old paper Bulletins, but it is easy to play on a computer as well. Not so easy on a tablet or phone, since most of the puzzles require right-clicks, not easily done in a tablet or phone environment.

Galaxiesstarts you off with yet another grid of gray cells, with white dots inside cells or on the borders separating them. Your job is to divide the grid into groups of cells so that each group has a symmetric shape (rotating it 180 degrees creates the same shape) and contains only one white dot at the exact centre of the shape. You'll click on the borders between cells to draw in boundaries between groups, and when a new group is created that fits the rules, the group will be coloured white. However, this shape, while fitting the rules, may not be part of the actual solution, and you may have to adjust the shape later to make other groups also fit!

Click on the puzzle you want to try at the right (or the caption below) to go to the page with all the instructions you'll need.

These puzzles come from Simon Tatham's Portable Puzzle Collection (see below) and there are links there to apps for most devices. You can make puzzles of any size and difficulty level!

Day Five (Friday) Results

Friday Open Pairs

Winners: Mark Itabashi, Michael Mikyska

Event winners Mark Itabashi and Michael Mikyska had over 62% in the afternoon session for third overall, but this was not to last: four rounds of 70% or more closed the gap on the leaders, and another string of strong rounds near the end sealed the deal. The under-4000 strat was a duel between two VIctoria pairs with Glen Thornborough and Axie Millar coming out just ahead. Under-2000 winners William Voth and Wayne Borman had a tougher time of it in the evening session but held on for the third strat win.

Two-session pairs event, scored in matchpoints.  Strat limits (by pair average): A: 4000+ / B: 2000 - 4000 / C: 0 - 2000.
