Congrats to the winners!
Didn't do as well as you hoped? Don't worry; there is a large luck factor in short sessions, so there are increased chances of scores outside the normal range of about 35-65%. Things tend to even out over time, but less time means less even-ing out! The important thing is to have fun and let the learning happen by gaining experience as declarer, defender, and even as dummy, and perhaps by reading a little about the hands below!
Our game results are posted online here at ACBL Live For Clubs, shortly after the main game ends.
The deals tonight are from July 8's open game. Thanks to Barry who did such a fine job and sent me the files. Happily, I have Tuesday off here in Toronto so I was able to process the files shortly after I received them here in Toronto at the North American Bridge Championships, where on Monday I was one of a staff of six directing a team game of 107 teams, and this was one of a dozen or more events that took place! A few days ago I was one of the directors in a National Event, and after a director call, actually called the technicians to view footage taken of the playing area to see whether a 2♣ bid-box card (hastily withdrawn when the player realized that his right-hand opponent had not passed, but instead had bid 4♠!) was held in a position for partner to see its face; we concluded it was not, but that partner could certainly see that the intent was to make some bid! Even the players were impressed and accepted the eventual ruling when I told them that we had consulted the footage.
Below is a full-colour screen version of the comments for each hand. This works best if you have kept score and brought your scorecard home with you so you can check your results against the hand records and see where there is room for improvement. You will find that the simple act of writing down the score on each hand (good or bad) serves as a sort of marker inside your memory that helps you recall later what the issues you thought about while playing that hand were. It's much easier to remember if you have taken the few seconds to write in the contract and the score than to rely on getting your results off the internet. Something happens in those few seconds inside our brains and you'll be surprised at how much you can remember later with the help of a well-filled scoresheet. More on this here.

North and South haven't enough to get into this auction and the East-West auction should start with a 1♦︎ opener by East and a 1♥︎ response by West. East has the first question, whether to rebid 1NT or 2♣︎. I prefer 1NT, where if it ends there you have chances to score big (or go down), and if West chooses to continue most pairs have more familiar structure over a 1NT rebid than 1♦︎ - 2♣︎. But either is fine and in this case West should bid 4♥︎ over 1NT (which will always have at least two hearts), and over the 2♣︎ rebid can bid 2♠︎, the fourth suit, to force to game, and bid hearts next, allowing East to decide between 3NT and 4♥︎. With the K♣︎ onside a key diamond discard allows 4♥︎ to make an overtrick, while 3NT makes only ten tricks maximum.

North picks up a big hand and sees that, as usual, everyone else gets a chance to bid first. For once they all pass and North is allowed to open 2♣︎. The hand has four losers (1.5 in spades, 1 in hearts, 1.5 in clubs) and 4.5 quick tricks (1 in spades, 2 in diamonds, 1.5 in clubs) so it definitely qualifies for a 2♣︎ opener. South bids 2♦︎ and North rebids 3♦︎ to show a very strong hand with a diamond suit. South raises to 4♦︎ (showing some good cards, as the call to make with a bust would be an artificial 3♥︎ in this auction), and North bids 4NT, finding one ace with South and choosing 6♦︎, which South gets to play! Everything works and the opponents get only the A♠︎ for a good slam! 6NT is a stretch, since you probably need two of the three missing cards (A♠︎, K♥︎, K♦︎) to be well-placed to make it.

South and West pass and North opens 1♥︎. One of the themes I often say is that when they open the suit you were about to open on your right, your best move is to pass. The only exception is when you have some other overcall that fits the bill. East has such a call, 1♠︎. Nornally you show five for an overcall, but four good ones at the 1-level often is your only possible call other than pass. If East does pass, North-South will play in their eight card heart fit and go down on the 5-0 trump break. But if East bids 1♠︎, West will compete and ten tricks are easy in spades on a cross ruff: two minor suit aces and eight ruffs. If South overruffs the fourth round of clubs with the Q♠︎ East pitches a diamond from dummy and still makes ten! Four-card 1-level overcalls are risky, but can often work.

West passes and North should as well, it's not quite strong enough for a 1♥︎ opener in first or second seat. East opens 1♣︎, South overcalls 1♦︎, West passes, and North bids 2♥︎. East competes with 3♣︎ (a bit risky vulnerable) and South continues with 3♦︎, knowing North probably does not have four spades (with both majors North might cuebid clubs), or is about to bid spades to show 4-5 or 4-6 in the majors. North in fact bids 4♥︎ and only a trump lead (and another when in with the club winner) holds it to ten tricks. If North opens 1♥︎, East overcalls 2♣︎, South bids 2♦︎, and North rebids 2♥︎. When East rebids 3♣︎, South cannot make the non-forcing call of 3♦︎ and risk missing a game with 12 points and shape opposite an opening bid. Better is 3♠︎, and North will bid 4♥︎.

North opens a weak 2♠︎ and East overcalls 3♥︎ rather than make a takeout double and risk catching partner with a club response. South raises to 4♠︎ and West passes. North passes as well, and nobody knows for sure whether South's 4♠︎ call is a good hand or a sacrifice. (At this vulnerability, it is considerably less likely to be a sacrifice, but possible.) East probably should pass, but if East wants to compete, the best call is ... 4NT! Double would be for penalties and 4NT is a sort of takeout call asking West to do something reasonable (bearing in mind that East has a good heart suit). West would bid 5♦︎, which is down only two against a 4♠︎ cold for eleven tricks. On a bad day, West would bid clubs and East would have to hope 5♥︎ was not a total disaster.

West passes and again North opens 2♠︎. East passes and South has an even better hand this time. 2NT responses to weak twos are something pairs agree to play in many different ways, but one popular way to play it is to ask for a 'feature,' a high honour in a side suit, opener retreating back to his suit without one. North bids 3♣︎ over 2NT and this is just what South needed to hear: South bids 3NT and makes ten tricks for 430, losing only to pairs in 4♠︎ who managed to sneak an eleventh trick somehow! Ten tricks are not easy though if the opponents don't lead a heart and allow a finesse: you must play clubs for four tricks by leading the Q♣︎. If West does not cover, knock out the A♠︎ and later put West in by ducking a diamond and West is endplayed: any lead will give you an extra trick!!

There is this perception that 1NT is a difficult contract to declare; let me tell you, it is even harder to defend! Good players try to prevent 1NT from being the final contract if they can safely. Here, South passes, West opens 1♦︎, North overcalls 1♠︎, and East passes. South bids 1NT and West can see that passing will probably make 1NT the final contract. 2♥︎ is risky since partner might be short, but the bidding indicates that partner should have some support. 1NT in fact probably makes eight tricks: four clubs, three spades and a diamond. So 2♥︎ down one is an improvement, but down two is disaster, so West will need to be careful. After four tricks in clubs and spades, West can crossruff, cash the A♦︎ and later lead towards the jack in hand and make seven or even eight tricks!

A very good player in Kelowna recently told me that eight points is often not enough to invite in notrump, now that we all play 15-17 instead of the former 16-18. He said he prefers a good eight, with a long suit or working honour combinations. As West he would let partner play 1NT on this hand while others would struggle in 2NT. Luckily for declarer, diamonds break 4-4 and the Q♣︎ and Q♥︎ are coming down on normal play, and nine tricks are easy. But it is a good point: the West hand will very seldom miss a game by passing, many 17-counts will not be enough, and on hands like this where 15 opposite 8 might make only seven tricks if diamonds are 5-3 or 6-2, you might gain on other results by passing 1NT. Interesting point!

North's hand is close to an opener but not quite there, and East opens 1♦︎. South makes a takeout double and West bids 1♥︎, knowing that this may be the only bid West gets to make on this auction. North bids 2♠︎ and East competes with 3♥︎. South bids 3♠︎ and West passes, and North will probably bid 4♠︎ with all that shape. East is far too vulnerable to think sacrifice, as one pair found out by writing 1100 in the minus column! East leads the A♥︎ and North looks at dummy and immediately thinks crossruff. If East comes to the same conclusion and leads a trump at trick two, North may not make 4♠︎: at some point the A♦︎ and a diamond ruff is overruffed by West and the roof caves in on the crossruff when West leads a second trump.

East opens 2♠︎, South overcalls 3♥︎, and West raises to 4♠︎. North is a bit surprised there are 10 highcard points left for the North hand in this auction but has no safe call to make and 4♠︎ is the final contract. Even if South begins with the 9♦︎ to North's ace and a diamond ruff at trick two, the result is the same eleven tricks, because East will win trick three, pull trumps, and pitch the club loser on a high diamond. 5♥︎ doubled might not be so bad here; East-West get only a spade, a club, and a trump trick, and perhaps a second spade if declarer is unable to ruff twice in dummy. But on a normal day, 5♥︎ might go for a huge number at this vulnerability.

All roads should lead to 3NT here. After two passes, North has a choice: 1♣︎ or 1NT? The case for 1♣︎ is that it may in fact be too strong for 1NT: 17 with three aces and a king and no unstopped suit is more like 18! If North opens 1♣︎ and South responds 1♥︎, North must be sure to get this message across with a rebid of 2NT (South raises to 3NT) or 2♠︎ (South bids 3NT and plays it there, hoping diamonds are stopped). If North opens 1NT, South bids 2♣︎ asking North for a four-card major and after the 2♠︎ rebid settles for 3NT. In 3NT, declarer can set up three spades, four clubs, and the A-K♥︎ and the A♦︎ makes ten, with the possibility of an eleventh trick in hearts or diamonds if the defense falters.

Only an optimist would open the West hand as dealer, counting the singleton K♦︎ as three points and two more for shortness — that's more than the A♣︎ is worth! So West passes and North opens 1NT, passed back to West. Now is the time to get in with a 2♠︎ call, since defending 1NT is never easy. This ends the auction and works like a charm as long as West can hold it to down one. With five losers outside spades, this means one trump loser is the goal. A key lesson for new players is not to lead honours, lead towards them instead. A♠︎ and a spade towards the queen, or leading the 4♠︎ towards the queen on the first round, is better than leading the Q♠︎ or T♠︎ and hoping something good happens. 1NT makes so down one is a good E-W score!

Rules for pre-empts: check the vulnerability and bid to the level of what you expect to make, minus 2 (unfavourable), 3 (equal), or 5 (favourable) tricks. Here the vulnerability is equal and North expects to make seven tricks opposite nothing, so adding three we get ten tricks and 4♦︎ is the right level. Even if the opponents begin with A♠︎ and a spade to West's king and a third spade, North ruffs with the ten, plays a heart to the ace, a diamond back intending to finesse until West drops the king, and has nine tricks for down one and a good score, with 140 available in either major for East-West. At favourable vulnerability, North could open this 5♦︎, or even 6♦︎, although that might not go well on this layout...

East and South pass and West opens 1♠︎. North makes a takeout double, and East bids 2♥︎, which, after a takeout double is not forcing, since East has the option of a redouble with any strong hand. (One-level suit responses after a takeout double are forcing, though.) South bids 3♣︎, and West passes, often the best action with a minimum opener. North passes as well and East has to pass as well. The A♥︎ and a second heart get West a heart ruff, but there is no re-entry to the East hand and there is only the A♦︎ as a fourth defensive trick.

South passes and West opens 2♣︎ with five quick tricks and about the same number of likely losers. North tries 2♦︎ as a potential lead director and East doubles. If partner's 2♣︎ opener is overcalled or doubled, a double or redouble shows a bad hand and bidding shows at least one or two high honours. South passes, fearing the worst, and West bids 2♥︎, taking North off the hook. North passes happily and East bids 2♠︎. West continues with 3♥︎ and East tries 3NT, ending the auction. South leads a diamond and there are only eight tricks available: an eventual diamond, two hearts, four spades, and the A♣︎. Unlucky; maybe the West hand isn't quite enough for 2♣︎, but even a 1♥︎ bid will likely result in a 3-level rebid for West and one down in whatever the final contract is.

West opens 1♠︎ (with 5-2 in the majors open the major, even with a semibalanced 15-17 hand; 1NT on these tend to get transferred to the wrong major and sometimes dropped there!) and North overcalls 2♥︎. East has only three spades and is far too strong for a mere single raise to 2♠︎, so doubles first. South passes and West continues to 3♦︎. North passes and East now bids 3♠︎, and West bids 4♠︎. North leads the A♥︎ and sees dummy's hearts and switches to the 8♠︎ at trick two. West wins in hand and leads a second heart through North, who takes the ace and leads a third, ruffed by South and overruffed by West. West now plays the A-K♣︎, noting the fall of the queen from South, concedes a diamond and crossruffs the rest. Finessing the J♣︎ is the route to a needless one down!

North passes and even notrump-crazy me would not open East's 15-count 1NT, so 1♣︎ it is. South overcalls 1♦︎ and West bids 1♠︎, which surprises North into passing. East rebids 1NT and South rebids 2♦︎, which is not a great success. On this layout, 2♥︎ would be a better rebid by South, but if North had no fit that could be disastrous. Some hands are just unlucky; I don't see a way around this disaster.

West opens 1NT after two passes and hears three more. North leads a small diamond and it's game on. The K♦︎ is a sure stopper on this lead and there are three heart tricks and perhaps the spades will provide enough. The diamond suit is wide open when West wins the first trick with the king, crosses to the K♥︎ and leads a spade to the queen. North pounces, but diamonds break 4-4 so its not a complete disaster, except that South is careful enough to grab the fourth diamond and lead the J♣︎. West covers and the defenders have three diamonds, the K♠︎, and the AQ♣︎. However, the T♣︎ controls the third round and hearts also break 3-3, so declarer sneaks home with seven tricks.
