E*V*I*L Gets A Reboot! Here are the basics:

E*V*I*L Season Nine link

What, when, where?  It’s E*V*I*L (Electronic Vancouver IMP League) Season Eight (results below, the final Season Seven page, including playoffs and play-ins, is here), a free event (free of entry fees and masterpoints) of team matches.  Matches are on Tuesday Evenings, at 7:00pm (see schedule below for dates).  Formerly known as the Summer IMP League, but it has outlasted the summer of 2020!

Below you will find standings, match result grids, team rosters, important instructions on how to set up a team match on BBO, and the E*V*I*L rules, and an explanation of the structure of the league.

Season Eight started on January 25, seven Tuesdays ending March 8 with three Tuesdays of playoffs to follow. Watch this space for the announcement of Season Nine, which will follow a hiatus as the club focuses on live bridge in April 2022.

March 29: Congrats to the Season Nine playoff winning teams: Zhong in The Big Show and Hong in the Big Ticket!

March 28: The VBC Re-Opening date has been announced: Friday, April 1 at 10:30am will be the first game (full announcement is here). We hope to see all of you at the club as we work to re-establish live bridge over the coming weeks. Season Nine of the IMP League will at some point begin, after a hiatus of probably several weeks, but hopefully not as long as last fall's break. The club premises have been painted and some artwork added and you'll want to check it all out!

March 8: Week Seven of Season Eight is done and the playoff schedule is below, after lots of final pushes for the division titles and playoff spots tonight! In The Big Show, BC Buds have clinched the top spot, with Krywaniuk second, and Jin Mei third. Maksymetz came within a single IMP of passing Zhong for fourth place, but was barely eliminated from playoff contention with the Jin Mei win. In The Big Ticket, Hong is the winner, followed by Koblenz, Carr and Levesque.

January 18: The Season Seven final, Zhong vs BC Buds, was close at the half but Zhong pulled away like Secretariat in the second set. Congrats to the champions! The final Season Seven page, including playoffs and play-in results, is here.

June 15: Special alert: thanks to the complicated multi-tabbed setup screen for team matches, it is becoming a somewhat common error to set up matches for the default of 8 boards instead of the agreed-upon length. The trouble is that we can't contact people once they are in the team game bubble. If you see less than the expected number of boards in the History tab for your match, let the others at your table know that more boards may be needed afterwards! The best solution in these situations is to play 2 or 4 boards extra with the same lineups at the end, but if people leave you can also add boards to the second segment to get to the required total.

Issue: misclicks. Following a dispute about these in Week Three of Season Five, I have added a new page here explaining what has to happen for a score adjustment based on a claimed misclick. Short version: agree as best you can at the table about what to do, even if this means agreeing to present the facts to me later, Directors cannot attend team tables — understand that for a misclick to be correctible it must be blatantly obvious that it is unintended.

Very slight rules tweak: A team that decides to sit out a season retains the eligibility they earned in the season before their sabbatical. We'd prefer that you find a new player or two and continue with the members who can, but that's not always possible.

I continue to get messages from people who contact the captain of the team they are up against next and hear nothing back. It takes only a minute to log on and check your BBO messages; let's not make the assumption that you can just show up on Tuesday night and sort everything out. At the same time, Saturday is a bit early to raise the alarms, folks! You can use the player lists below to contact other members of the team, which might work, but I don't have any special ways to contact people that you don't; if they stay off BBO for a few days they won't get messages. It is safe to assume that the opponents will appear on Tuesday night at 7pm if you hear nothing, and if they do not, we will get you to replay the match and perhaps apply some penalty (which usually seems smaller than the aggrieved team expects, by the way). Please, captains, don't make this a habit and create difficulties; check in and see if there are messages, at least by Sunday evening, just in case there is some special situation that needs to be catered for.

There is no rule requiring this, but partnerships in the IMP League really should have convention cards loaded. It doesn't take long to create one and learn how to use it in play. If you do not have a convention card loaded and you forget to alert or announce an agreement, leading to a ruling, you lose the right to the benefit of any doubt. Make a card; use it. It matters.

Match reporting form no longer needed: This is no longer necessary now that most matches appear on the BBO team game results list page. But if you set up a match and do not play it all through to the end but do want to count the results obtained, you need to tell me about it since such matches will not appear in the list. Some time back, a 24-board first half was abandoned after 12 so a second half could be played with a different lineup. That’s fine and the result should certainly count, but I won’t see it in the team game list, unless you pass out the last 12 boards (not reccommended). In that case, or if I should interpret the data wrong (which occasionally happens), or if you have agreed on a transfer of IMPs because of an irregularity, you should let me know by BBO message to McBruce or by e-mail (ooga@shaw.ca).

Live bridge returns to the Vancouver Bridge Centre on April 1 at 10:30am (full announcement here). The main job of the online game will be to stay out of the way for a few weeks as live bridge returns. Once live bridge is re-established, there will still be a very few weekly online VBC games, and we'll begin a Season Nine signup. Ken will be the one to make the ultimate decision on when we begin a Season Nine of E*V*I*L and just how we do so: it may be 100% online, or there may be an option to play at the club for teams who wish to. The best way to encourage its quick return in some form, would be to get out and play in club games a few times, to support the reopening effort (and remind Ken that the IMP League is popular while you're there!). We'll keep you informed on this page about the progress and the prognosis for Season Nine's start.

E*V*I*L (Electronic Vancouver IMP League) Season Eight Team Rosters

We have fourteen teams in two divisions. The Big Show is a complete 7-match round robin; the Big Ticket is a 5-match round robin with Weeks 1 and 2 repeated in Weeks 6 and 7. All communication between Summer IMP League captains should be done using the BBO messaging service. If you hear nothing from your next opponent, a good next step is to contact ALL the other players on the team! (Someone will wake up the captain rather than risk a forfeit....)
