2022 Leavenworth Regional: Saturday, April 9

Welcome Weekenders!

Glad you could make it!

April 9 Historical Headlines (from Wikipedia)

Can you fill in the blanks and then put them into the correct chronological order? (Answers at the bottom of the page...)

Attendance So Far

372 tables at the end of Friday. For full details, check out the new Table Counts page!

As we all transition from pandemic isolation to pre-pandemic normal at our own careful pace, bridge clubs and tournaments throughout the ACBL are struggling with returning to live play, so comparing this tournament's attendance to one before the pandemic is not really fair. In addition, the heavy rain that hit the coast on Sunday evening/Monday morning moved inland and created some snowy conditions for those arriving on opening day. Things will pick up as more people choose to carefully increase their social activities. Live tournament bridge had to begin somewhere and Leavenworth attendees are pioneers for the eventual return of tournament bridge's pre-pandemic popularity. Thanks for coming, and to those of you reading this from home and not quite ready to return to the tables yet, we understand and hope to see you soon!

The 2019 Tri-Cities Regional was 421 tables, and we can get to 422 with 25 teams playing both sessions on Sunday, or we could hit an even 400 with just 14 teams. Thanks of course to all of the players who attended!

Masterpoint Leaders thru Saturday Evening

There are some slight differences between the list on this site and the one on ACBL Live. A close look seems to indicate that the issue is with the Side Game Overalls and I'm not sure whether ACBLscore (which I use) or ACBL Live is doing it wrong, but I'll take a closer look next week when I have some time.

Saturday Open Pairs

Winners: Helen Miller, Stephen Hosch

Event winners Helen Miller and Stephen Hosch had a small lead at the halftime break, and by the middle of the evening session had built it into a lead of nearly three full boards, allowing them to finish comfortably in front with a few average-ish ending rounds. Strat B winners Aban and Bob Gerrie were second overall at the break and at the end of every round in the evening, except for one drop to fourth which was quickly recovered in the following round.

Two-session pairs event, scored in matchpoints.  Strat limits (by pair average): A: 3000+ / B: 1500 - 3000 / C: 0 - 1500.
Average masterpoints for players in this event: 2682

Saturday Gold Rush 0-750 Pairs

Winners: Anita Hansen, Mella-Dee Mayberry

Ahead at the break by two full boards, event winners Anita Hansen and Mella-Dee Mayberry alternated very good rounds with below average rounds in the evening session, never lost the lead, and the five-round game gave them three good rounds and two not so good, so the sum total was a slight increase in the size of their lead by the end. Yesterday's Gold Rush winners Leona Ashcroft and Liesbeth Goris took the under-500 strat lead after the first evening round by the smallest of margins and held on in a close race for a win by just under half a board.

Two-session pairs event, scored in matchpoints.  Strat limits (by pair average): 7: 500 - 750 / 5: 300 - 500 / 3: 0 - 300.  No player over 750 was eligible.
Average masterpoints for players in this event: 377

Saturday Round-Robin Teams

Winners: Cline (A), Ball (B), Hsieh (C)

Winners Cline slipped up in round 6 but by then they were well ahead of the field and two more wins against the top two contenders sealed it. Strat B winners Ball gave Cline a tough match in round 7 but lost by 2, then in the finale they needed only 2 VPs to nail down the strat B win and got 5. Strat C was tied before the final round but the Hsieh team came through with a big win to grab the under-600 strat.

Swiss Teams event with 8 matches of 6 boards, scored in Victory Points (maximum 20 per match. Strat limits (by team average): A: 2500+ / B: 600 - 2500 / C: 0 - 600. The original intent was to have multiple brackets, but with only one bracket, the event was stratified instead.
Average masterpoints for players in this event: 1697

Side Game Series Overall Winners

Winners: Karen Rise (Morning, Evening), Gene Gousie, Jeannie Falls (Afternoon)

Overall awards in the Morning, after 5 completed sessions.  Scores are based on the sum (in percent) of an individuals two best games, even if played with different partners.  Side Game overall awards are in gold points and replace the points you won in individual games in the series.  But if you played several games and got masterpoints, that sum may be higher than your overall award, and you would get the overall award in gold points and the rest of your sum in red points.
