2022 Leavenworth Regional: Tuesday, April 5

Get ready for the non-knockout Knockouts, beginning tomorrow!

It's happened to all of us: we enter a knockout teams with some of our best bridge-playing friends, and it all lasts a single session, as we draw the strongest team in the bracket to start. Sometimes it's really frustrating as we come only a few IMPs short before they go through the remaining three rounds like a hot knife through butter. Well, we're trying something new at this tournament, beginning on Wednesday: Soloway-style knockouts! In this format, teams play all, or nearly all, of the other teams in their bracket in short matches on the first day, and after two sessions, the four teams with the most victory points advance to the semi-finals on the second day. This keeps everyone in for two sessions, and the teams knocked out will have a two-session bracketed teams to play in Thursday (as well as one on Wednesday and Thursday morning for the early-risers; the sequence will be repeated on Friday and Saturday). And if you do lose by one IMP to the strongest team in round one, you'll have the rest of the day to recover and reach the semis; and, 9 VPs out of 20 in the first round will be more than many of your rivals get! The top team in the qualifying Swiss gets to choose their semifinal opponent, so there's something extra to play for on the first day!

Attendance So Far

72 tables at the end of Tuesday. For full details, check out the new Table Counts page!

As we all transition from pandemic isolation to pre-pandemic normal at our own careful pace, bridge clubs and tournaments throughout the ACBL are struggling with returning to live play, so comparing this tournament's attendance to one before the pandemic is not really fair. In addition, the heavy rain that hit the coast on Sunday evening/Monday morning moved inland and created some snowy conditions for those arriving on opening day. Things will pick up as more people choose to carefully increase their social activities. Live tournament bridge had to begin somewhere and Leavenworth attendees are pioneers for the eventual return of tournament bridge's pre-pandemic popularity. Thanks for coming, and to those of you reading this from home and not quite ready to return to the tables yet, we understand and hope to see you soon!

Thanks to Matt Koltnow for re-sending the Tuesday files after the first batch appeared to be a bit off...

Dienstag Swiss Teams

Winners: Hauck (A), Gerrie (B)

The scheduled Open Pairs didn't quite go and pairs formed teams to fill out the Swiss. Matt tells me that the eighth round in an 8-team Swiss (after everyone played every other team in the first seven rounds) was played Danish-style, where teams were matched 1-2, 3-4, etc. By that point, Hauck had a 24 VP lead and won again to go 8-0! Gerrie won three and tied the finale in the evening session to seal up the Strat B win.

Swiss Teams event with 8 matches of 6 boards, scored in Victory Points (maximum 20 per match). Strat limits (by team average): A: 2500+ / B: 0 - 2500. nbsp;
