2022 Penticton Regional: Monday, June 13

It was three years ago today....

...that the Raptors won the NBA championship in Oakland! Oddly enough I cannot find a single reference to it in the 2019 online Bulletins; I was probably too busy....

June 13 Historical Headlines (from Wikipedia)

Can you fill in the blanks and then put them into the correct chronological order? (Answers at the bottom of the page...)

Attendance So Far

99½ tables at the end of Monday, 51.1% of the 2019 total. For full details, check out the new Table Counts page!

Bridge clubs and tournaments throughout the ACBL are struggling with returning to live play, so comparing this tournament's attendance to one before the pandemic is not really fair. We'll be happy if the tournament hits 50% of the 2019 table count of 3217½ tables (so 1609 is the target number).

Cashless Entries Are Now In Canada!

(Canadian TDs learning the system, arrive early!)

The decision has been made to try to make this a cashless tournament. (We changed Marv's message on the Welcome page to reflect this, like a "1984" edit of the Times!). If you haven't brought a credit or debit card with you to make the transaction, ask your partner to do so for you and give them the cash you have collected! After a few days, I'm told that this system is easy and quick compared with the old insecure way of having massive amounts of cash laying around as games were getting started.

20% bonus for overall awards!

At Regionals and Sectionals for the next year

A recent ACBL decision to put a spark into offline play at sectionals and regionals is a 20% increase in all overall awards. Session awards are not affected, but the overalls in all strats and knockout brackets will be. We hear that ACBLscore is being a bit finicky about this so we'll be checking closely. For the online Bulletins today I originally added a fifth to the KO overall awards, but it turned out that was not necessary and only proved that I'm not sure about the innards of my own program (anyhow, they've been changed back...).

Evening Side Game Series, Game 1 of 5

Winners: Bryan Maksymetz, Frances Corney

At the end of the first round, eventual winners Bryan Maksymetz and Frances Corney were ... wait for it ... 84th overall. In twelve rounds they passed 83 pairs! That's even more overtakes than the dude driving the Kelowna-Penticton transit route I was on yesterday afternoon, who should be applying to replace Canadian F1 backmarkers Lance Stroll and Nicholas Latifi....B Winners Edgar L'Heureux and Sally Craig led the field during the middle rounds until a few A pairs passed them near the end, but held on for a tight B-strat win. C winners Michael Desaulniers and Dariusz Matus grabbed the final A overall spot with a score of 57%, putting them atop the non-LM leaderboard after Day One!

Single-session pairs event, scored in matchpoints.  Part of the Evening Side Game Series, session 1 of 5 in the series.  (In a side game series you are free to play as many sessions as you wish, even with different partners.)  Strat limits (by pair average): A: 2500+ / B: 750 - 2500 / C: 0 - 750.
Average masterpoints for players in this event: 2511
