Bridge clubs and tournaments throughout the ACBL are struggling with returning to live play, so comparing this tournament's attendance to one before the pandemic is not really fair. We'll hope to get a little more than last year, around 60% of the 2019 attendance, making the target number 771½ tables this time — but perhaps we will be pleasantly surprised!



Checking Out

One problem with doing puzzles for Daily Bulletins based on dates is that tournaments tend to be held on the same dates year to year. We've done puzzles based on births, and news events, and every time I put them together I realize I've done this before. So, a new angle this time: famous people who died on this day. Here are five from August 24: how many can you guess? Answers near the end of the page.

Haven't You Ever Wondered About That First Marathon Run?

The legend of the Marathon, the 26+ mile long-distance race that is one of the final events on the Olympic schedule, is that in 490 BC, a runner named Phiedippides ran the distance from Marathon to Athens in order to send the news that the Greeks had prevailed over the Persians in the Battle of Marathon, before escaping Persian ships were able to get to Athens and report fake news. Phiedippides ran the distance, delivered the message to magistrates in session, and then died. Here is the question I asked Microsoft's Copilot, an AI addition to Windows 11:

Saturday Open Pairs

Winners: Jack Yuan, James Rasmussen

Event winners Jack Yuan and James Rasmussen needed only the first round of the afternoon session to cover the quarter-board gap they trailed by at the break, and increased their lead to nearly two full boards by the end! Under-3000 winners Craig Harrison and Donald Perry came from ninth place with five rounds to go to win the event by slightly more than a single matchpoint! The under-1500 strat was a race, with Huang Zeng and Shawn Ringwood, second at the break, slowly and steadily reeling in the halftime leaders and passing them with two rounds to go, and having to re-pass them again in the final round to win by a little more than a quarter of a top!

For those of you who used to like the puzzles I printed in the old bulletins, here is a link to an online version: one of the puzzles that I used to feature in the old paper Bulletins, but it is easy to play on a computer as well. Not so easy on a tablet or phone, since most of the puzzles require right-clicks, not easily done in a tablet or phone environment.

Signpost challenges you to find the path from #1 at the top left to the highest number at the bottom right, following the arrows from number to number: 1 points to 2, 2 points to 3, etc., but the distance between consecutive numbers may be one cell, or many, in the indicated direction.

Strategy: Check the instructions provided with the game for how to use several useful tools to help you solve these without guesswork. You can, for example, mark a sequence of cells that connect together with a letter and connect a number later, or you can right-click on a cell to see which other cells point to it.

One Final Olympics Question, Solved By Artificial Intelligence

Haven't You Ever Wondered About That First Marathon Run?

The legend of the Marathon, the 26+ mile long-distance race that is one of the final events on the Olympic schedule, is that in 490 BC, a runner named Pheidippides ran the distance from Marathon to Athens in order to send the news that the Greeks had prevailed over the Persians in the Battle of Marathon, before escaping Persian ships were able to get to Athens and report fake news. Pheidippides ran the distance, delivered the message to magistrates in session, and then died. Here is the question I asked Microsoft's Copilot, an AI addition to Windows 11:

Why didn't the Greeks put Pheidippides on a horse instead of having him run all the way to Athens?

Copilot took about ten seconds to search the internet and found no less than four answers:

There are a few reasons why Pheidippides ran instead of riding a horse:

  1. Terrain: Ancient Greece is known for its rugged, mountainous terrain, which is not ideal for horses. A runner could navigate the rocky and uneven paths more efficiently than a horse.
  2. Specialization: Pheidippides was a professional runner, known as a hemerodrome, trained specifically for long-distance running. These runners were highly skilled and could cover great distances quickly on foot.
  3. Horse Availability: Horses were relatively rare and expensive in Ancient Greece. They were not as commonly used for long-distance travel as they were in other cultures.
  4. Horse Endurance: While horses can run fast, they require frequent rest and water breaks, especially over long distances. Humans, particularly trained runners like Pheidippides, can maintain a steady pace for longer periods without needing as many breaks.

So, it was actually more practical for Pheidippides to run the distance rather than ride a horse.

Interestingly, there is recent doubt as to the accuracy of this 2500-year old story. The name Pheidippides appears in a contemporary account of the lead-up to the battle, Athens first sending him to Sparta, 150 miles from Athens, to seek help against the approaching Persians. A different, later account adds that Pheidippides returned from Sparta and was immediately sent to Marathon and back, another 52 miles, but this account was written hundreds of years later and used a slightly different name, Phillipides. Most historians believe that any professional runner would be able to complete the trip to Marathon and back easily, but perhaps not a day after making the much longer Sparta round trip! In addition to the Marathon race coming from this ancient story, there is also a much longer event called the Spartathon that also exists for ultra-long-distance runners of today!
