Bridge clubs and tournaments throughout the ACBL are struggling with returning to live play, so comparing this tournament's attendance to one before the pandemic is not really fair. We had hoped to get a little more than last year and instead got slightly less, and a great success would have been around 60% of the 2019 attendance, for which we were not far off, ending at 54.5% of the pre-pandemic total.



Checking Out

One problem with doing puzzles for Daily Bulletins based on dates is that tournaments tend to be held on the same dates year to year. We've done puzzles based on births, and news events, and every time I put them together I realize I've done this before. So, a new angle this time: famous people who died on this day. Here are five from August 25: how many can you guess? Answers near the end of the page.

Winners: He (A, B, C)

What a finish! Event winners He were 5-0 and only then finally lost one, but were ahead by 1VP with a match to go, with two teams, Epley and Hong, two VPs back and matched together in the final round, and another, Miller, only 6 back but consisting of the top four on the tournament masterpoint list. Miller won 17-3 in the final round to get to 96 VPs. Epley beat Hong 14-6 to get to 97 VPs. He won 13-7 to get to 98 VPs and the event win, also winning the under-4000 and under-2000 strats!

Brain Workout Section!

For those of you who used to like the puzzles I printed in the old bulletins, here is a link to an online version: one of the puzzles that I used to feature in the old paper Bulletins, but it is easy to play on a computer as well. Not so easy on a tablet or phone, since most of the puzzles require right-clicks, not easily done in a tablet or phone environment.

Keen is a Sudoku variant with a little math involved. Like Sudoku, you must fit numbers into the grid (from 1 to the number of cells in a row or column) so that there are no repeats in a row or column. As well, you must ensure that the numbers placed into each block (those groups of cells bounded by heavy lines) match the number and the arithmetic operation at the top left of the block. Subtraction (-) and division (÷) are always two cell blocks and the numbers can be in any order. Addition (+) and Multiplication (×) can be three or four or more cells and some of the products can be surprisingly high! In larger blocks it is permissible to have a number duplicated as long as the duplicates are not in the same row or column.
